MCG Hosted eCycling 2011 Bringing In Tons of Waste

Oskaloosa's 8th Grade AAU Team helped unload computers and other electronic equipment from trucks during the eCycling event.

Six thirty in the morning, on Saturday April 30th, was an early start for some of the volunteers that were helping to make MCG’s 5th annual e-Cycling event the success it was.

They were expecting to have 25 to 40 tons of e-waste from residential customers, with an additional 10 to 15 tons of waste coming in from local businesses said Brad Boender, one of those on hand helping make the day run smoothly. Estimates put this year and last years intake about the same. But with 2 lanes of possible traffic and speedy unloading, they certainly seemed to have the capability to handle an even greater intake of used electronics. Accepted items included computer monitors, video game systems, cell phones, printers, personal computers, laptops, stereos, televisions, keyboards, DVD players and VCRs.

Employees from MCG volunteered along with the Oskaloosa 8th Grade Boys AAU team, Trees Forever, Pheasants Forever and KAL Services. They were all on hand donating time and, in some cases, gaylord boxes and pallets for stacking the items as they came in.

Brian Vandermeiden of KAL Services, a local recycling firm, was on hand to help, along with others from KAL that were donating their time to help out the environment.  It didn’t seem to matter what the volunteers were asked to do. They jumped right in to help, doing most anything needed, from directing traffic to unloading pickup trucks.
