Oskaloosa, Iowa – Motivotational speaker Dr. Willie Jolly brought his highly sought after motivational speaking to the George Daily Auditorium this week.
Jolley’s first speech was to a combined group of students from Oskaloosa High School and William Penn University. “The auditorium was full,” said Paula Wright, Superintendent of Oskaloosa School District.
“He had a great message for the students,” added Wright. “The message was how to reach your dreams. To dream big. To dismiss the dream busters and accept the dream boosters.”
An example of a dream buster would be drugs and alcohol and hanging around negative people. A dream buster could also be not accepting your talents or hiding your talents because people may make fun of you.
Jolley also spoke about how to boost your dreams, such as hanging out with people who believe in you and boosting your self-esteem by telling yourself that you were born for greatness.
“The kids received the message very well,” added Wright.
The afternoon session with Dr. Jolley was with staff from the Oskaloosa School District, and staff members from Musco, Mahaska Health, William Penn, and VanWall.
That session was about achieving excellence and that as a team, they can market themselves, selling our product and selling ourselves, and that it’s okay to be good, but you always want to strive to be better.
“The message was really good this afternoon,” said Wright of that session. “A lot of teachers had a lot of great things to say.”
The Oskaloosa School District has had a mission of social and emotional learning while working to improve the culture and climate of the District.
The goal is to work to help build each other up and expect to have high expectations for our students explained Wright of the District’s goals.
In November, the District will host another workshop that will help with the mental health side.
“Our whole focus and goal this year is to bring awareness to our staff and our students about achieving excellence and that we hold the key to that. That we within ourselves can achieve excellence and that our barriers are not too great to overcome. That we can overcome those barriers,” said Wright in closing.
Jolley then had an evening speech that was available to the public.
