Herrera in Top Five as WPU Places Fourth in Jayhawk State Event

McPherson, Kan.–Andon Herrera (So., Katy, Texas, Business Management) just missed shooting under par for the tournament as he guided the William Penn men’s golf team at the Central Kansas Classic Monday and Tuesday.

The Statesmen placed fourth out of 14 teams with a two-round score of 594 (296-298) at the par-70 Turkey Creek Golf Course. Iowa Western CC won the team trophy at 572 (280-292).

Hesston CC’s Mark Neely was the individual medalist in the tournament, posting a two-under 138 (70-68), while Herrera was just three strokes back in a tie for third at 141 (69-72).

Francois Assaud (Sr., Montelimar, France, Sports Management) was in the runner-up spot for WPU, tying for 20th out of 73 players at 148 (75-73), while Tyler Pedretti (Fr., Upland, Calif., Business Management) finished in a tie for 27th at 150 (75-75).

Tying for 45th, Clay Morse (So., Sigourney, Iowa, Business Management) (77-79–156) was one stroke ahead of Luke Galeazzi (Sr., Knoxville, Iowa, Business Management) (79-78–157), who tied for 47th overall.

“This was a good next step for our men,” Head Coach Elise Ibrahim said. “Andon Herrera had another really solid two days. We will reset and give our team an opportunity to work on key areas before our final three back-to-back-to-back tournaments. As a group, we are hungry to perform and we have great depth, so the competition for spots is fierce.”

Next Up: William Penn takes a couple weeks off before traveling to Iowa City to compete in the Central Classic on October 7-8. Play will be contested at Finkbine Golf Course.
