Central’s Nikkel nominated for national service award
PELLA, Iowa—Central College tight end Cory Nikkel (senior, Pella, Pella Christian HS) is a nominee for the Allstate American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team.
The honor recognizes student-athletes who are actively involved in service work and maintain good academic standing.
A voting panel of college football media and previous Good Works Team members will select two 11-player Good Works Teams in late September. One squad will represent Divisions II and III, the NAIA and the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision while the other team will be comprised of players in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision.
Nikkel, a 6-foot-2, 220-pound tight end, is one of 132 student-athletes nominated for the award.
An English and secondary education major, Nikkel earned 2010 academic all-Iowa Conference honors and posted a 3.76 grade point average (4.0 scale). He has traveled on numerous mission trips, internationally and locally, is active in Central’s service-learning and Campus Ministries programs and most recently spent three months in Australia on a service trip through Youth With A Mission (YWAM).
