Central’s Harvey named athlete of the week
PELLA—Central College senior Jason Harvey (Goldfield, Clarion-Goldfield HS), the Iowa Conference men’s golfer of the year, has been tabbed the league’s male athlete of the week.
Meanwhile the Dutch swept the men’s outdoor track and field conference honors. Junior Ethan Miller (Seymour) is the field events athlete of the week while the 4×100-meter relay squad was cited in track events.
Harvey fired an even-par 72 in the final round of the league tournament Saturday at Iowa City’s Finkbine Golf Course to top teammate Justin Livingston (sophomore, Winterset) by two strokes for medalist honors. Harvey carded a 78-71-79-72-300, landing conference MVP honors and all-league recognition a second time. He placed ninth in 2009. Harvey was also recognized as the men’s golfer of the week April 4.
The Dutch shaved 19 strokes off their third-round score to capture their 29th league title. The championship secures a 30th NCAA Division III tournament berth, scheduled to be held at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C. May 10-13. First-year coach Chad Green was named the Iowa Conference men’s golf coach of the year.
Track and field—Miller shattered a decade-old school record in the decathlon at the Drake Relays Thursday. He placed fourth, compiling an NCAA automatic-qualifying score of 7,134 points. Miller posted five lifetime bests and led the loaded field after five events Wednesday. Peter Wagner set Central’s previous decathlon mark in 2001 with 7,058 points, a performance that garnered a national crown. Miller currently holds the top mark in Division III. This is his fourth time receiving the honor in the outdoor season and second this year, being noted April 4.
The 4×100 relay team of Trevor Veach (junior, Grinnell), Logan Danko (sophomore, Centerville), Kyle Wood (junior, Newton) and Allen Scovel (junior, Runnells, Southeast Polk HS) finished sixth in the college division at Drake Relays with a provisional-qualifying mark of 41.58 seconds. The time is just shy of their season’s best earlier this month (41.54), which is ranked sixth in Division III. It’s the fifth consecutive week Wood has been tabbed the track athlete and the seventh in his career. Scovel and Danko were both cited April 25, 2010.
