by Wade Steinlage
Oskaloosa–The Statesmen wrestling team started the night well, but unfortunately things unraveled in a 39-6 Heart of America Athletic Conference loss to #1 Grand View in dual-meet action Tuesday.
William Penn (1-5, 0-2 Heart) won the first two matches of the night and went the distance in three other bouts, but could not keep pace with the top-ranked Vikings (11-0, 3-0 Heart).
John Altieri (Jr., Warwick, R.I., Sociology) got the navy and gold off to a solid start with a 4-3 win over Sidney Oliver at 125 pounds. The junior was behind by one point as the final seconds ticked down, but he took down Oliver as the buzzer sounded to claim the victory.
Darquell Pierre (So., St. Petersburg, Fla., Sociology) doubled the advantage to 6-0 with a 6-4 win at 133 pounds. He took the early advantage and held on to defeat Omeed Chamanzad.
184-pounder Jay Fresh (Grad., Knoxville, Iowa, MBL), by a score of 8-6, and 285-pounder Max Lewis (So., Duchesne, Utah, Biology), by a score of 3-1, both lost tight matchups in the upper weights.
