The navy and gold fell behind 6-0 after two weights, but then dominated the remainder of the meet, beginning with a 10-5 win by 141-pounder Hector Diaz (So., Miami, Fla., Human Services) over Richard Ortiz.

Drew Evans (Jr., Collinsville, Ill., Business Management) then pinned Ettien Rodgers Jr. in 59 seconds at 149 pounds, while Kael Bunce (Sr., Stockbridge, Mich., Mechanical Engineering) cruised past Joel Campbell to the tune of an 18-2 technical fall at 157 pounds.

The navy and gold could not make up a 23-0 deficit after dropping their first five matches. A pin by Hargrove over Braden Headington in 53 seconds started a run of three straight victories, but it was not enough.

Van Donselaar shut out Tanner VanScoy in a 15-0 technical fall and Bottorff also won by a 21-5 technical fall over Ben Vogt, closing the margin to seven at 23-16.

Unfortunately, the Spires secured the win with a triumph at 197 pounds. Boucher sent WPU off on a positive note, however, by pinning Conner Owen in just 20 ticks.

The Statesmen ran out of gas in the final meet of the day, coming up empty in their first five bouts before finally breaking through.

Hargrove put the Statesmen on the board with a fall over Bridger Bennion in 5:57, while Boucher beat Max Knard by a 14-1 major decision.

“We wrestled tough today, back to giving great energy and fight,” Head Coach Aron Scott said. “I am particularly proud of Cameron Hargrove and Isaac Boucher for having really great matches. This was a good way for us to go into the break with some confidence.”
