Statesmen Place in Top Half at Mid-States Championship

Wichita, Kan.–The William Penn men’s bowling team took on another Tier 1 field as it battled at the Mid-States Championship last Saturday and Sunday.

William Penn finished 13th out of 32 teams with 9,575 pins in six regular games and 20 Baker games.

Wichita State (Kan.) topped qualifying with 11,331 pins, but was upset in the bracket play quarterfinals by #8 seed Oklahoma Christian 3-0. #5 Wisconsin-Whitewater eventually took the match play trophy with a 3-0 victory over #5 seed Newman (Kan.) in the title bout.

Spencer Robarge of Wichita State was the top individual with a 243.5 average (1,461 pins), while Noah Kidwell (Fr., Bettendorf, Iowa, Mechanical Engineering) guided the navy and gold in the 312-bowler field with a 202.7 average. He was the only Statesmen to start all six games.

Conor Fetherston (So., Dublin, Ireland, Software Engineering), with a 202.0 clip, and Connor Rissi (Jr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Psychology), with a 196.2 mark, both competed in five rounds.

Aidan Piet (Fr., Meridian, Idaho, Business Management) was next with a 174.8 average in four games, while the duo of Garraty Richmond (Sr., Ottumwa, Iowa, New Media) (196.3) and Jared Smith (Sr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, General Accounting) (175.0) both rolled three games.

Caleb Sterbenz (Sr., West Liberty, Iowa, Applied Computer Science), with a 163.5 average, and Bryce Keykal (Jr., Princeton, Minn., Education), with a 156.0 average, wrapped up WPU’s scoring with two games each.

“Overall, it was a good weekend,” Head Coach Cameron Foster said. “Our guys found themselves down big early, but fought back. They continue to get stronger and we will work on things to help us improve as the year moves forward.”

Next Up: WPU will take two weeks off before traveling to Davenport on November 11-12 to compete in the ISYL Leatherneck Classic.
