Roger Rease Doak, 82, of Oskaloosa and formerly of Hedrick, Iowa died Thursday, December 13, 2012 at the Northern Mahaska Nursing and Rehab Center in Oskaloosa. He was born December 23, 1929 in Hedrick, the son of Frank and Hillian Bender Doak. Roger graduated from the Hedrick High School with the class of 1948. Following graduation he worked with his father and brothers doing carpentry work. He then joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Manchester, England, Coos Bay, Oregon and later in McCook, Nebraska. On February 9, 1951 Roger was united in marriage to Joyce Best at Cheyenne, Wyoming. Following his discharge, Roger worked with Zlogar Construction in Ottumwa. In 1963 he went to work at John Deere in Ottumwa and worked there for 28 years until his retirement in 1991. Roger loved gardening and was known for his large flower and vegetable gardens. Roger also loved golfing and he passed that love to his sons and grandsons. On July 7, 2002, Roger hit his first hole in one on the par 3 Hole #5 at Harvest Point Golf Course in Oskaloosa, which was witnessed by his grandson Ben Doak and honored by Jeff and Lori Smith.
Roger is survived by his wife of over 61 years: Joyce Doak of Oskaloosa; two daughters: Carla Doak of Hedrick and Corby (& Ron) Phillips of Keota; three sons: David Doak of Bellbrook, Ohio, Douglas (& Tami) Doak of University Park, Iowa, and Glen (& Lisa) Doak of Hedrick; 20 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and two sisters: Virginia Ramey and Regina Capps both of Ottumwa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Donald and Dallas Doak; and three sisters: Irene Bowlin-Gullett, Geneva Daughtery, and Frances Lint.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, December 16, 2012 at 1:30 P.M. in the Fremont Funeral Chapel in Fremont, Iowa with Reverend Bill Hornback officiating. Military rites will be given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W.
Burial will be at a later date in McCormick Cemetery near Highland Center. As was his wish his body has been cremated and no visitation is planned at this time.
Memorials may be made to Mahaska Hospice or Northern Mahaska Nursing and Rehab.
