Kenneth Garrett

Oskaloosa. Kenneth Garrett, 47, of Oskaloosa died Tuesday, August 23, 2011, at his home in Oskaloosa. The son of Keith and Nancy Martin Garrett, he was born September 12, 1963, at Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1983. Following high school he served in the United States Army. Following his discharge he returned to Oskaloosa and worked construction for various companies. On July 12, 2011, he was united in marriage to Mary Vander Hoek at Oskaloosa. He enjoyed fishing, camping and taking long walks.

His family includes his wife, Mary Garrett of Oskaloosa; his daughter: Kia Whitten of Oskaloosa; his parents: Keith and Nancy Garrett of Oskaloosa; his sister and her husband: Sherri and Delbert Pettyjohn of Bussey; a step daughter: Carrie Snow of Oskaloosa; four stepsons: Tommy Caldwell of Ottumwa, James Platt of Ottumwa, Terry Platt of Marshalltown, and Billy Platt of Oskaloosa; three step grandchildren: Nicole and Dakota Gibson and Tymbur Platt; three nephews: Brian Pettyjohn, Dylan and Derek Springer; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 25, 2011, at 1 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel with Reverend Gary Reeves officiating. Military rites will be given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion, V.F.W. and D.A.V. As was Kenny’s wish he will be cremated following the funeral ceremony. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Wednesday after 1 p.m., and the family will be at the funeral chapel 5 – 7 p.m. Wednesday.
