Visitation: will be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, August 22, 2011 at Garland-Van Arkel Langkamp Funeral Chapel. The family will be present at 1 p.m. Tuesday morning and greet visitors until 1:45 p.m., at which time a procession will form to travel to the cemetery.
Graveside Service: 2 p.m., Tuesday afternoon, August 23, 2011 at Forest Cemetery
Interment: Forest Cemetery with Military Honors by the Harry L. Anderson Post #34 of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2237 and Disabled American Veterans Post #21.
Ken passed away Saturday morning at Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa at the age of 85 years, 8 months and 26 days.
Kenneth Raymond Brown, son of David Jay and Gladys Hartgrave Brown, was born November 24, 1925 in Oskaloosa, Iowa. He was a 1942 graduate of Oskaloosa High School and then worked for the M & St. L Railroad. He entered the Army December 28, 1943. He served as an instructor with the 61st Training Regiment and attained the rank of staff sergeant. He was honorable discharged October 28, 1945. Ken married Katherine May Lesher June 3, 1928 in Oskaloosa where they made their home. Following his return from WWII, Ken resumed working with the railroad and worked as a switchman until 1959. He then began working as a custodian with the Oskaloosa school system. He later worked as a custodian for General Telephone Company in Grinnell, IA. Ken was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed building model airplanes and refinishing and rebuilding furniture.
Ken’s family includes two sons: Kenneth (Valeria) Brown of Rapid City, SD and Keith (Betty) Brown of Cedar Rapids, IA; nine grandchildren; many great grandchildren; and a brother and sister-in-law, Walter & Catherine Brown of Oskaloosa.
Besides his parents, Ken was preceded in death by his wife Katherine on April 11, 1993; four brothers: Frank, Albert, Harry and John; and two infant sisters.
