Junior College basketball standout Alec Schwab signs his letter of intent to play for William Penn

Oskaloosa, Iowa – The William Penn Men’s Basketball team has been in the process of rebuilding after a very successful year.

The coaching staff has been out shaking hands and talking with other coaches in a effort to continue the development of the Statesmen Men’s Basketball team.

One more piece of the puzzle was added this week with the signing of Alec Schwab.

Schwab has been a junior college standout from Illinois Valley Community College, following a similar path that current Penn standout Kevin Faye followed during his time at the junior college.

William Penn Men’s Basketball Head Coach John Henry describes Schwab as a player with tremendous talent and a great person and student. “We’re just very happy and honored to be getting him to come be a Statesmen.”

Schwab has scoring potential, as was demonstrated by a 49 point single game tally. “He can really, really fill it up,” Henry added.

Schwab could help to fill the hole left by 3-point wizard Taylor Stoutner. “He has big shoes to fill,” Henry added. “We’re hoping that Alec can come in and be the first Alec and not the second Taylor.”

Schwab isn’t afraid to step into that role. He says he’s ready to show them what he can do and make his own name from 3-point land.

After some real coaxing from Coach Henry, Schwab decided to make the move to Wm. Penn. Schwab said that it’s nice to know that he’s welcome at Penn and Oskaloosa. “It’s hard to say no,” adding that after last year’s season, and looking forward to this year, “it’s pretty hard to pass up”.

Alec adds that the secret to his success is going out and playing hard, and doing what you’re told to do. “Being coachable… and not afraid to screw up,” and having fun with the game. “Play to win and not to lose.”

Coach Henry added that there is some work to do yet in the recruiting department. “We’re hoping that the late summer months might add one or two more pieces.”

Last year’s special run may add extra pressure for this year, and in asking Coach Henry what he learned from the experience, “I learned so much I could probably write a book on it… but to sum it all up, their togetherness, family… I took a lot from that. Those kids taught me a lot about how to handle situations and keep the group together. They taught me.”
