AMES, Iowa – Dec. 27, 2010 – The seventh annual Iowa Bicycle Summit will be held Jan. 28-29, 2011, at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines. The gathering will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, and is sponsored by the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) and Iowa Bicycle Coalition.

Friday’s session will focus on bicycle facility design with a workshop presented by Antonio Rosell. Rosell is an urban planner and civil engineer with more than 15 years of planning and engineering experience. He is licensed as a professional engineer in Minnesota, a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners, and the founder and director of Community Design Group. Rosell provides training on bicycle and pedestrian planning topics for practicing engineers and planners, and is also a regular guest lecturer at the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey Institute, as well as a Fellow at the Intermedia Arts’ Institute for Community Cultural Development. “People who ride bicycles have been asking for better bicycle facilities, and the Iowa Bicycle Summit is the only formal bicycle facility design education offered in Iowa,” says Mark Wyatt, executive director of the Iowa Bicycle Coalition. “Antonio Rosell is going to give us a great Midwestern perceptive from his experience in Minnesota and the Twin Cities.”

Saturday’s sessions feature presentations related to design innovations, Safe Routes to School Program, new marketing ideas, improving bicycle safety, and urban dirt. Andy Clark, executive director of the League of American Bicyclists, and Rosell will be keynote speakers on Saturday morning.

The Friday workshop is limited to 100 people and Saturday’s sessions are limited to 150 attendees. Early registration is recommended prior to Jan. 1. Registration for the entire summit (Friday and Saturday) is $160 ($175 after Jan. 1). The cost to attend only the Friday session is $140 ($155 after Jan. 1) or the Saturday session $35 ($50 after Jan. 1). Registration includes all conference materials, lunches and breaks.
