Florence Sterk, 82 of Montezuma passed away Thursday morning, April 25, 2019 at Windsor Manor in Grinnell. Florence K. Sterk, the daughter of Floris and Henrietta (Van Der Pol) Dunnick, was born on December 5, 1936 in Lynnville, Iowa.
Florence attended Black Oak Country School before graduating from Lynnville High School in 1955.
On August 17, 1957, Florence was united in marriage to Leroy Sterk at the Lynnville Friends Church. To this union three children were born, Kendall, Kendra and Kelly.
Florence was a dedicated farmer’s wife and homemaker. She had a big garden and was known for growing green beans and having her children help her snap them. She also worked several years at Alexander Drug in Montezuma and most recently the Montezuma Nursing Home.
Faith and family were very important to Florence and she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Evangelical Church where she helped with vacation bible school, the children’s after school programs, she taught Sunday School for many years, sang in the church choir and belonged to the Presbyterian Women. She was also a member of the Poweshiek County Cattle Women “Cow Bells”, LGT Club and Beulah Club. She also helped decorate tables and serve at the 50 Plus Club meetings and funeral luncheons. Florence was an avid reader and enjoyed doing crafts, sewing and embroidery.
Her legacy will be honored by her husband of nearly 62 years, Leroy Sterk of Montezuma; three children: Kendall (& Julie) Sterk of Montezuma, Kendra (& Harold) Spivey of Waterloo, and Kelly (& Kim) Sterk of McCordsville, IN; seven grandchildren: Hannah (& Dan) Stukey, Levi (& Alecia) Fenner, Jake Fenner, Kyle (& Ruth) Sterk, Caitlyn Sterk, Nicole Sterk and Lucas Sterk; six great grandchildren: Colton, Abbilyn, Laikyn, Caitlin, Craig and Caleb; two sisters, Arma Eaton of Colorado Springs and Alma (& Mel) Freese of Haverhill; and many other nieces, nephews and friends.
Florence was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Andrew.
Funeral services will begin at 10:30 am Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at the First Presbyterian Evangelical Church in Montezuma.
Burial will be held in the Jackson Township Cemetery in Montezuma.
Visitation will begin after 2:00 pm Monday, April 29, 2019 at the First Presbyterian Evangelical Church with the family present from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Evangelical Church. Holland-Coble Funeral Home of Montezuma is in charge of arrangements.
