Elsie Edwards

Oskaloosa. Elsie Elizabeth Edwards, 87, of Marcus and formerly of Oskaloosa, died Thursday, December 23, 2010, at the Heartland Care Center in Marcus, Iowa. She was born on November 15, 1923, in Mahaska County, the daughter of Matthew and Faye Lewis Edwards. She graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1942. She continued her education at Kletzing Bible College (the former Vennard College) in University Park, Iowa, earning a Bible degree. She also earned a Bachelor’s degree from William Penn College. Elsie lived on the farm with her parents most of her adult life. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Oskaloosa where she taught Sunday school for many years. She enjoyed playing the piano. She was very involved in her nieces and nephews lives. For the past several years she lived at Marcus, Iowa, to be near her niece, Connie McDonough. She found great peace at the care center and enjoyed Connie’s daily visits.

Her family includes a brother and his wife: Lewis and Mildred Edwards of Altoona, Iowa; a sister: Annabelle Vallandingham of Shawnee, Oklahoma; three sisters in law: Janet Edwards of Mesa, Arizona, Wanda Edwards of Oskaloosa, and Margaret Edwards of Knoxville, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers: Matthew Edwards, Jr. Thomas Edwards, and Richard Edwards; and a sister: Esther Edwards.

Funeral services for Elsie Edwards will be held Tuesday, December 28, 2010, at 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Gary McDonough officiating. Burial will be in the Beacon Cemetery near Beacon. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation with the family will be Tuesday morning from 9 until service time at 10. Memorials may be made to Hospice.
