Oskaloosa, Iowa – This coming week, the Oskaloosa High School will host a Project Based Learning event. The PBL Showcase will run from 6 to 8 pm on March 10th at the Oskaloosa High School.

Molly Sterner, PBL Instructor with the Oskaloosa School District, describes what Project Based Learning is. “Project Based Learning is an approach to teaching and learning that stresses student-driven, academically rigorous inquiry. In PBL, students pose questions, gather and interpret data, develop and evaluate solutions, and build evidence for answers. Teachers have been giving these kinds of assignments for years, but at OHS, we’ve put a new focus on PBL.”

The projects that community members can expect to see at the showcase can take on different forms. “One of the characteristics of a PBL activity is that it has a public element. This is what has inspired our PBL Showcase. We are excited for the community to come in and see the great work our students have done with PBL activities across the curriculum.”

“The Showcase will feature a variety of exhibits, demonstrations, performances, and works-in-progress. Parents and community members can experience a French restaurant, participate as panel members as students present business proposals, learn about the physics of carnival games, view art and other creative projects, see a variety of performances and demonstrations, and much more,” added Sterner.

“We’re excited about the opportunity to give the public a glimpse into the kinds of wonderful things our students are doing,” says Sterner.
