County Supervisors hear early requests on MHP bonding

Mahaska County Supervisors asking MHP's Jay Christensen questions during 10-18-2010 meeting

The Mahaska Board of Supervisors meet in regular session on October 18, 2010.

They received the MCARD Report from director Miranda Johnson. The Mahaska Country Sanitarian Eric Dursky made his report on his recent activities. He has been getting many inquiries into lead program assistance programs. Eric explained that there isn’t any programs out there. The state is not offering any assistance currently on this type of program.  He says they continue to get many calls especially on older homes after the water damage from this summers flooding. He also said he’s been dealing with some flooding issues on private property that is effecting others. Lots of calls on bed bugs, mold and lead poising. He is trying to help continue education on those issues.

The conservation report was next, Dave Sedevic gave his report to the supervisors. He informed of updating some of his qualifications. Also did an overview of recent conservation events.

Supervisors adopted the recently mandated Mahaska County Hazard Mitigation Plan. These are mandated by FEMA now for communities and other entities. Mitigation Plans form the foundation for a community’s long-term strategy to reduce disaster losses and break the cycle of disaster damage, reconstruction, and repeated damage. The planning process is as important as the plan itself. It creates a framework for risk-based decision making to reduce damages to lives, property, and the economy from future disasters. Hazard mitigation is sustained action taken to reduce or eliminate long-term risk to people and their property from hazards.

Leroy Nugteren spoke about the County Home Cemetery. He has been looking into the overgrown County Home Cemetery. The records on it have been hard to find, and the person’s buried there is currently unknown completely. To date he has 48 burials, but his list is not exhaustive. He asked the Supervisors for help in funding the surveying of the cemetery. Board approved no more than $1500 be spent on this currently.

Next was the discussion with Mahaska Health Partnership. They are wanting to have the designation of urban renewal and recovery zone designations to help with bond issues on the project currently underway. If the County helps bond the project, the hospital would get a better interest rate, saving them 16 million over the life of the bonds. One of the concerns raised by Greg Gordy was that if doing this put Mahaska near the limit of it’s bonding ability, it would cause the counties rate to rise for any of it’s projects it might need to do in the future. This is an issue that will be covered in greater detail at the next supervisor meeting.

Supervisors got quarterly reports for the Auditor, Recorder and Sheriff. They also approved the liquor license renewal for Peppers. Approved 28E agreements with University Park, Eddyville and Beacon for Sheriff’s service. The contracts are the same as last years.
