WPU Takes Home Season-Opening Crown
Oskaloosa–The Statesmen shotgun sports team started its fall campaign with hardware as it won the Coe Invitational last Saturday.
William Penn rolled to the victory, placing first out of four teams with a score of 544-for-600. All shooting was in the Sporting Clays discipline. Upper Iowa was a distance second at 505-for-600.
Colten Uitermarkt (Sr., Otley, Iowa, Master’s of Organizational Leadership) and Dominick Ver Meer (Jr., Pella, Iowa) paced the navy and gold, tying for first at 184-for-200. Uitermarkt then defeated Ver Meer in the shoot-off for the High Overall Athlete title.
Christopher Berkshire-Lewis (Jr., Kansas City, Mo., Business Management) also finished in the top three at 176-for-200.
Raylee Bishop (So., Ankeny, Iowa, Engineering) and KayLynn Sieber (So., Marshall, Minn., Biology) tied for the top spot in Female High Overall Athlete at 159-for-200, but Bishop earned the title in a shoot-off.
“I was very pleased with how our team worked together and pushed each other,” Head Coach Steve Heaton said. “The freshman did very well for their first collegiate event. We definitely have some work to do to gain a few more targets, but I am very confident in this team’s ability to succeed.”
Next Up: William Penn travels to Lincoln, Neb. this weekend to compete in the Midland Invitational Friday through Sunday.
