WPU Picks Up Second-Straight Crown
Fort Madison–With all five varsity members at 75 or lower, the Statesmen men’s golf team overcame wet, rainy weather to win the Iowa Wesleyan Classic Monday.
William Penn finished first out of eight teams with a score of 291 at the par-72 Sheaffer Memorial Golf Course. Host Iowa Wesleyan was second at 297.
WPU’s title is its fourth of the year and second in a row.
The entire lineup was solid, led by tournament medalist Clay Tucker (Sr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Elementary Education) who posted a two-under 70 for his first career title.
Frederik Lundsgaard (Jr., Jebjerg, Denmark, History/Government) and Brandon Dizon (Sr., San Leandro, Calif., Sociology) were next in the standings as they both tied for third at 73.
Zachary Chegwidden (Fr., Essex, England, Business Management) and Sebastian Rulis (Jr., Denmark, Business Management) wrapped up the squad’s scoring, tying for seventh at 75.
William Penn had its JV in competition as well and the second crew placed fifth with a tally of 319. Zach Swink (Sr., Burlington, Iowa, Sociology) guided the team at 75 to tie for fifth place. Peter Frederiksen (Jr., Hornslet, Denmark, Mechanical Engineering) and Cade Hartman (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev., Business Management) tied for 22nd at 81, while Kyle Hashimoto (Sr., Acampo, Calif., Exercise Science) tied for 25th at 83 and Skylar Cunningham (So., Knoxville, Iowa, History/Government) finished 34th at 89.
Four individuals also battled Monday, including Rory Schafer (Jr., Solwezi, Zambia, Mechanical Engineering) (T-14th, 77), Austin Payne (Jr., Ash Grove, Mo., Biology) (41st, 96), Jason Forsyth (So., Weatherford, Texas, Psychology and Human Services) (T-42nd, 97), and Caleb Pipes-Goulsbra (Jr., Lincoln, England, Exercise Science) (T-47th, 109).
Next Up: William Penn travels to Lawrence, Kan. next Monday and Tuesday to compete in the Baker Invitational. Play will be contested at East Bend Golf Course.
