Dubuque–The Statesmen volleyball team claimed a win and suffered a loss Friday at a triangular hosted by Clarke.

William Penn (3-14) opened the evening with a 3-1 win over Calumet-St. Joseph (Ind.) (25-17, 25-21, 23-25, 25-19) before falling 3-0 to the host Crusaders (21-25, 22-25, 17-25).

With the four-set triumph, the navy and gold eclipsed 2014’s win tally. Claire Simmons (Fr., Williamsburg, Iowa, Psychology) posted 14 kills and Savanna Hartman (Jr., Morgan Hill, Calif., Psychology) joined her in double figures with 12 winners.

Simmons also got the job done at the service line with six aces, finishing one shy of the program’s single-match record. Leyra Jusino (Sr., Bayamon, P.R., General Biology) had 38 assists and Danielle Breeher (St. Louis, Mo., Biology) dug 20 CCSJ attempts; five different players reached double digits in digs.

Hartman and Nicole Harrison (Jr., San Diego, Calif., Biology) were also both part of three blocks each.

The Statesmen held late advantages in each of the first two sets, but were unable to finish off either round. All of that expended energy would have come in handy in the third set as Clarke wrapped up the match in straight sets.

Hartman paced the offense with 11 kills and Simmons contributed six. Jusino was solid as well with 26 assists and two aces, while Breeher managed 11 digs. Also defensively, Simmons and Alexis Weatherspoon (Fr., Kansas City, Mo., Physical Education) blocked three CU tries apiece.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Hannibal, Mo. next Tuesday to face Hannibal-LaGrange in non-conference action at 7 p.m.
