William Penn Tied for 77th in Final Winter Directors’ Cup Standings
Oskaloosa–A deep finish by the men’s basketball team helped move the William Penn athletics department into the top 100 as the final winter Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Standings were released Thursday.
The Statesmen earned 108 points in the winter to be currently tied for 77th in the NAIA. A total of 172 NAIA institutions have scored points thus far, while 248 schools comprise the association.
The men’s basketball team garnered 70 points for its national quarterfinal appearance, while wrestler John Altieri (Fr., Warwick, R.I., Sociology) single-handedly helped WPU’s wrestling team to 38 points for its 34th-place finish at nationals.
Biola (Calif.) is first in the nation with 560 points, while Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) (538), Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) (529.5), Wayland Baptist (Texas) (515), and Campbellsville (Ky.) (447) round out the top five.
William Penn ranks sixth among all Heart of America Athletic Conference institutions; Benedictine and MidAmerica Nazarene top the league in a tie for 13th place with 337 points.
The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution’s finish in up to 12 sports-six men’s and women’s.
