Pella–The Statesmen and Lady Statesmen cross country squads began the fall just down the road at the Central Dutch Invitational Saturday.

On the men’s side, William Penn was sixth out of seven teams with 172 points. Iowa Central CC held off host Central, 28-31, for the team crown, while the Tritons also claimed the women’s title with 23 points, 28 ahead of Grinnell (William Penn did not field a women’s team).

Blake Washington (So., Knoxville, Knoxville HS) paced the Statesmen in 34th place (out of 119 runners) in a time of 21:23.9 on the 6K course.

Nick Reynolds (Sr., Riverton, Utah, Iowa Western CC) was right behind him in 35th with a time of 21:25.1, while Nick Thomas (Fr., Salmon, Idaho, Salmon HS) also placed in the top 50. He took 48th at 21:50.3.

Deane Wichelt (Fr., Durant, Durant HS), in 81st with a time of 23:13.9, Quintin Marshall (So., St. Louis, Mo., McCluer South Berkeley HS), in 105th with a time of 24:40.0, and Cameron Pittman (So., Carl Junction, Mo., Carl Junction HS), in 111th with a time of 25:35.4, also competed for the navy and gold Saturday.

Kyra English (So., Draper, Utah, Alta HS) headlined the women’s effort by finishing 35th (out of 85 runners) with a 4K time of 22:31.4.

Morgan Avery (Sr., Minot, N.D., Iowa Western CC) and Sade Myers (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii, Radford HS) then went back-to-back, taking 76th and 77th, respectively. Avery ended at 25:44.8 and Myers’ time was 26:02.6.

Next: Penn travels to Decorah next Saturday to compete in the Luther All-American.
