William Penn Goes 2-2 in Ozarks Tourney

Point Lookout, Mo.–For the second weekend in a row, the Lady Statesmen volleyball team had some good and some not so good moments, splitting its four matches at the Mazzio’s Tournament hosted by College of the Ozarks Friday and Saturday.

William Penn (4-4) began Friday with a 3-2 loss to Illinois Tech (18-25, 24-26, 25-16, 25-16, 10-15), but responded with a 3-0 sweep of Bethany (Kan.) (25-13, 25-18, 25-16).

On Saturday, the navy and gold was on the positive side of a five-setter, winning 3-2 over McPherson (Kan.) (25-18, 23-25, 18-25, 25-20, 15-11), but ended the weekend with a 3-1 setback to Lyon (Ark.) (24-26, 24-26, 25-16, 23-25).

Lacey Taylor (Jr., Cedar, Iowa Western CC) erupted for 14 kills in her season debut against Illinois Tech, while Brittany Rohling (Sr., Thayer, Kan., Neosho CC) hit double figures with ten kills.

Katherine Stumberg (Sr., Williamsburg, Kirkwood CC), with 20 assists, and Dayna Sammons (Fr., Menomonee Falls, Wis., Menomonee Falls HS), with 14 assists, combined in the two-setter rotation.

Alanna Connors (So., Libertyville, Ill., Libertyville HS) guided William Penn with 18 digs, while Katy Hingtgen (Sr., West Des Moines, Dowling Catholic HS) was a serving machine, tallying six aces.

Rohling headed a spirited blocking attack with nine block assists (William Penn had 24 block assists and one solo block). Taylor managed one solo block and four assists as well.

Rohling led the offense against Bethany with 13 kills, followed closely by Taylor’s 11. Stumberg assisted on 20 of the team’s winners.

Connors dug 11 attacks, while Hingtgen again served well with three aces.

Taylor posted a weekend-best 18 kills in the McPherson victory. Rohling and Jeanette Cunningham (So., Mt. Orab, Ohio, Western Brown HS), who played for the first time this fall, added ten points each. Katie Rielly (Jr., Oskaloosa, Des Moines Area CC) contributed seven kills.

Stumberg recorded 25 assists and Sammons finished the match with 20, while Connors notched 23 digs. Also defensively, Cunningham assisted on three blocks.

Rohling concluded the weekend with 16 kills versus Lyon. Taylor, with nine, and Cunningham, with eight, came up just shy of the double-digit mark for kills.

Stumberg set 20 winners, five more than Sammons’ 15, and Connors had 19 digs. Another solid blocking performance was paced by Rohling and her six assists (William Penn had four solo blocks and 16 block assists). Hingtgen had two solo blocks and three assists and Taylor had five block assists.

Next: William Penn begins Midwest Collegiate Conference action Wednesday by hosting Mount Mercy at 7:30 p.m.
