A great start could not be maintained as the Statesmen men’s bowling team bowed out of national title contention at the XBowling Intercollegiate Team Sectionals Saturday and Sunday.

William Penn finished the 64 games of Baker play in eighth place out of 22 teams with 12,072 pins. Robert Morris (Ill.) won the sectional with 13,013 pins, while Wisconsin-Whitewater, Clarke, and Davenport (Mich.) also advanced. WPU ended 422 pins out of the last qualifying spot.

The navy and gold opened the weekend with a tremendous first 16 games, leading all participants with 3,105 pins. Unfortunately, the Statesmen fell off and the rest of the top squads warmed up as the team was fifth after the second block and down to tenth after the third block before making a push at the end.

On the individual front, WPU had 15 rollers in competition at the singles competition on Friday. Lucas Perdieu (So., DeWitt, Iowa, Public Accounting), still flying high from his title win at the conference meet two weeks earlier, guided his squad in 11th place with a 207.7 clip in the six-game event. He had a high of 221 twice and missed qualifying for nationals by only four spots and 34 pins.

Kyle Clark (Sr., Aurora, Ill., Physical Education), at 202.7, and Conan Mackey (Sr., Bray, Ireland, Public Accounting), at 201.5, were also above the 200 mark, while Quincy Bruce (So., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, General Accounting) (199.3), Travis Scott (Jr., West Saint Paul, Minn., Physical Education) (195.5), and Jacques Kaune (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska, Business Management) (194.2) were not too far from it either.

Stian Hoff (So., Orkanger, Norway, General Accounting) headed the rest of the crew at 185.2, while Michael Applegate (Jr., Council Bluffs, Iowa, Biology) was at 180.2, Connor Frederick (Sr., Ottumwa, Iowa, History/Government) was at 178.2, Cody Adair (So., Kearns, Utah, Undecided) was at 171.3, Cory Rissman (Jr., Yorkville, Ill., Industrial Technology) was at 170.5, Kyle Reese (So., Chicago, Ill., Human Services) was at 168.8, Ryan Howard (So., King, N.C., Music) was at 166.3, Kevin Wesely (Jr., Mount Pleasant, Iowa, Industrial Technology) was at 157.8, and Rylie Reidel (Fr., Knoxville, Iowa, Business Management) was at 144.8.
