William Penn Drops First Game of Year
by Wade Steinlage
Davenport–The Statesmen women’s soccer team pushed its best competition of the season to the limit, but came up just short in a 2-1 overtime loss to St. Ambrose Wednesday.
WPU (3-1-1) was outshot 17-5 and trailed 1-0 at the 35:50 mark on a penalty kick. Fortunately, the navy and gold answered right back when Ashley Broeker (Sr., Ankeny, Iowa, Exercise Science) cleaned up a rebound in front of the net just 31 seconds later.
Broeker’s goal is her first of the fall.
The Statesmen fought off numerous attempts by the Queen Bees (4-1) throughout the remainder of regulation, moving into overtime for the third time this season.
William Penn failed to pull off the extra-session upset, however, as the hosts won it 5:38 into OT.
Raunice Butler (Sr., Nassau, Bahamas, Physical Education) guided the offense with three shots, including two on goal, while Adyson Blom (Fr., Newton, Iowa, Human Services and Sociology) tallied nine saves Wednesday.
“Our ladies were unlucky this evening,” Head Coach Jaymee Highcock said. “This was our best performance of the season against a very strong opponent. Unfortunately, a lapse in concentration cost us in overtime. We, as coaches, are extremely proud of the ladies; if they play like that every game, we will see a lot of success.”
