William Penn Drops 4-1 Decision to Briar Cliff
Sioux City–A rough second stanza sunk the Lady Statesmen soccer team in a 4-1 loss to Briar Cliff in non-conference action Tuesday.
The Lady Statesmen (0-3-1) were tied 1-1 at the break, but the Chargers (2-1) tacked on three unanswered goals after halftime to claim victory.
The home team, which won the shots battle 21-9, broke the scoreless tie in the 27th minute only to see the navy and gold battle back to knot the game after 45 minutes.
Melisa Wink (Sr., Brookfield, Ill., Lyons Township HS) did the damage for her unit, tallying her first goal of the year at the 38:39 mark. The senior paced William Penn with three shots on the afternoon.
Unfortunately, Briar Cliff, guided by a hat trick from Sadelle Schultz, recorded goals in the 77th and 82nd (two) minutes in front of its home crowd.
Laura Gentry (So., Fruitland, Idaho, Fruitland HS) managed a season-best nine saves in the loss.
