Tucker’s Runner-Up Finish Leads WPU at Spring Opener

Oskaloosa–Spencer Tucker (Jr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Business Management) finished just two strokes off the lead as the Statesmen men’s golf team opened up its spring season at the Graceland Invitational Friday and Saturday.

William Penn finished fourth out of six teams with a two-round score of 637 (323-314) at the par-72 Mozingo Golf Course. Iowa Central CC won the team title at 606 (304-302), while Austin Erickson of ICCC was first in the 41-player field at 146 (72-74).

Tucker shot a 75 on Friday and then dropped two strokes to lead all participants in the second round with a 73 to finish at 148.

Andrew Lallier (Jr., Algona, Iowa) also placed in the top 20, tying for 14th at 157 (79-78).

Austin Hafner (Fr., Oskaloosa, Iowa) bettered his score by eight strokes from the first day to the second, tying for 23rd overall at 164 (86-78), while David Decker (Grad., Peyton, Colo., Physical Education) ended in a tie for 27th at 168 (83-85).

Brock Hartley (So., Wilton, Iowa, Business Management) rounded out the varsity scoring at 175 (90-85) to tie for 35th.

Ethan Kaiser (Sr., Belle Plaine, Iowa, Elementary Education), in a tie for 27th at 168 (88-80), and Mateo Varese (Jr., Moravia, Iowa, Business Management & Human Resource Management), in 41st at 190 (97-93), also competed as individuals for the navy and gold.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Fort Madison Tuesday to compete in the Iowa Wesleyan Invitational. Play will be contested at Sheaffer Memorial Golf Course.
