Thelma “Sue” Thomas, 86, of Grinnell and formerly of What Cheer, died Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at the Mayflower Community in Grinnell. Thelma Lovina Thomas was born in Omaha, Nebraska on April 21, 1930, the daughter of Lawrence Coon and Bertha Lucille Cowell.

Sue was raised and educated in Omaha. She began her working career as a Nurse’s Aide at the Douglas County Hospital. In November of 1952 Sue married Gearl D. Thomas in Sydney, Iowa. After raising their children she attended nursing school at Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs where she served as class president. After college she began working as an LPN at the Offutt Air Force Base Hospital.

In 1990 Sue retired and moved to What Cheer so she was closer to her grandchildren. She was a member of the Hope Lutheran Church in Sigourney and she was a Cubs fan long before it was cool to be a Cubs fan. Sue also enjoyed square dancing and just hanging out with her friend Kay.

Sue is survived by a son, Jerry Lee (& Nancy) Thomas of Council Bluff; a daughter, Patricia (& Mick) Clemens of Thornburg; a brother, Jack (& Janet) Coon of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren: Kris (& Scott) Robertson of Oskaloosa, Kelly Clemens of Keota, Kari (& Rob) Simmons of Avoca, Jennifer Clemens of Davenport and Joe (& Amanda) Clemens of Mount Ayr. She also leaves behind eight great grandchildren and a great-great granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Robert (& Betty) Coon and James (& Nancy) Coon; a daughter, Vicky Mortonsen; and two grandsons, Jerry Lee Jr. and Jeffery Thomas.

Funeral services will begin at 10:00 am on Saturday, December 17, 2016 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in What Cheer.
Visitation will be held Friday from 4:00 to 6:00 pm.
Interment will be held privately in the Sixteen Cemetery near Thornburg.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the family.
