Statesmen Win Defensive Battle Over Fighting Bees
by Wade Steinlage
Davenport–Amgad Hassan (Jr., Falls Church, Va., Computer Science) scored in the first half and the defense held up yet again as the William Penn men’s soccer team shut out St. Ambrose 1-0 in non-conference play Wednesday.
WPU (4-1) won its third-consecutive game despite tallying just eight shots. Conversely, the Fighting Bees (1-3-1) were limited to only seven attempts themselves.
Hassan broke the scoreless tie at the 26:50 mark, recording an unassisted goal. It is Hassan’s first goal of the season.
The defensive units then took over as William Penn shut out its foe for the third time in 2018. Of interest, all five games in which WPU has played have been decided by one goal.
Eduardo Bonatto (So., Rio Grande, Brazil, Business Management) topped the visitors’ efforts with three shots, while Miguel Barbosa (Jr., Sao Paulo, Brazil, Sport Management) had two saves for his third shutout of the campaign.
“This was a good win for our team,” Head Coach Jaymee Highcock said. “We did what we had to do in the first half and managed the game well in the second stanza. We still have lots of improvements to make, but the team is getting better and more solid every time out.”
