Statesmen Swept in Four-Game Series Against Northwestern
Minneapolis, Minn.–The William Penn baseball team opened its 2012 campaign against a formidable NAIA opponent and left the climate-controlled Metrodome a bit chilled.
The Statesmen (0-4) lost to Northwestern Friday by scores of 7-0 and 4-2 and were then swept again Saturday 2-1 and 5-1. The Red Raiders (4-0) are picked to finish second in the Great Plains Athletic Conference this year.
The navy and gold were hurt the most at the plate with a .140 batting average. Senior Brad Chin (San Rafael, Calif., San Rafael HS) was truly the lone bright spot as he finished 5-of-12 for a .417 clip.
Randall Packard (Sr., Forestville, Calif., Cal State-Monterey), with two doubles, and Aaron Laird (Sr., Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa HS) also notched a pair of hits, while Packard tallied two RBIs as well.
Jonathan Davis (Sr., San Diego, Calif., Southwestern CC) guided William Penn on the mound as he tossed three shutout innings out of the bullpen. Devin Lange (Sr., Tucson, Ariz., Paradise Valley CC) also posted a 0.00 ERA in two innings of work. Jorge Quezada (Jr., San Ysidro, Calif., Castle Park HS) struck out a weekend-high six batters.
Next: The Statesmen travel to Leavenworth, Kan. Sunday to face St. Mary in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
