Statesmen Close Out Regular with 35-9 Dual Win

Hannibal, Mo.–Behind three bonus-point victories, the William Penn wrestling team crushed Hannibal-LaGrange 35-9 in dual-meet action Thursday.

The Statesmen (3-4) opened action with a 16-9 win by Angel Villa (Fr., Deming, N.M., General Accounting) at 125 pounds.

133-pounder Bryce Castagna (Fr., Willcox, Ariz., Digital Communication) added another 6-2 decision before Scottie Bonds (So., Chicago, Ill., Physical Education) received one of WPU’s two forfeits to make it 12-0 after 141 pounds.

In one of the tightest matches of the night, Brad Watson (Jr., Rolla, Mo., Physical Education) was unable to keep the Trojans scoreless any longer, falling 12-8 to Tyler Sonnabend who is rated #5 in the Central Qualifying Group rankings.

Charlton Benjamin (Sr., Atlanta, Ga., Sociology) turned things around with a 15-5 major decision at 157, while 165-pounder Johnny Hopper (Fr., Basehor, Kan., Psychology) extended the advantage to 22-3 with another forfeit.

Jay Fresh (Jr., Knoxville, Iowa, Sociology) notched the best victory for the navy and gold by dropping Jeremiah Reed by a 7-3 margin at 174 pounds. Reed is the fifth-ranked grappler in the Central Region.

Ishmael Rempson (Sr., Olympia Fields, Ill., Industrial Technology) was a 12-4 victor at 184 and 197-pounder Kyle Soderblom (Sr., Newton, Iowa, Biology) picked up the last Statesmen ‘W’ with a fall in 4:02.

Next Up: William Penn travels to York, Neb. next Saturday to compete in the North Qualifying Group Tournament. Action begins at 9 a.m.
