Statesmen Advance to Title Game with 4-1 Win Over Marygrove
Whiting, Ind.–In a weather-shortened contest, the William Penn men’s soccer team claimed its first victory of the year, dropping Marygrove (Mich.) 4-1 in non-conference action at the Calumet-St. Joseph Crimson Wave Tournament Saturday.
William Penn (1-1) owned a slight 9-8 edge in shots, but capitalized on nearly half of those opportunities.
Jeff Kelly (Jr., Ottumwa, Indian Hills CC) and Jordan Hoffman (So., Hyde Park, Utah, Skyview HS) sparked the navy and gold early by pairing up for the first two goals.
Kelly broke the scoreless tie off a pass from Hoffman at the 15:27 mark and just over five minutes later, he returned the favor as Hoffman put one in the back of the net at the 20:39 point.
Tyler Mather (Jr., Des Moines, Iowa Western CC) gave the Statesmen a 3-0 advantage at halftime (goal at 38:08) with the assist going to Mark Dryden (So., Arbroath, Scotland, Arbroath HS).
Brendan Johnson (So., Clinton, Clinton HS) put an exclamation point on the win, tallying a score off a corner kick by Paul Kerr (Fr., Letham, Scotland, Lindenwood) in the 51st minute. Johnson led William Penn with three shots (all on goal).
The Mustangs notched their only goal in the 63rd minute, but ran out of time as the game was called in the 80th minute.
Sam Gurski (So., Beaumont, Texas, West Brook HS) picked up two saves on the night.
Next: William Penn will now take on host Calumet-St. Joseph in the championship game Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
