Smith earns league male athlete of the week award on the hardwood
PELLA — After returning home from Las Vegas with a pair of wins, Central College men’s basketball player Kyle Smith (senior, Grand River, New Hampton HS) was named the Iowa Conference Male Athlete of the Week.
On the women’s team, guard Emily Dine (senior, Oldsmar, Fla., East Lake HS) was named the women’s player of the week. Smith was also given the men’s player of the week honors.
With 35 points in two games, Smith led the Dutch in scoring at the D3hoops.com Classic in Las Vegas. Named a member of the all-tournament team, Smith had 23 points and six rebounds in the 74-69 win over the No. 6 rated Ramapo University (N.J.) Roadrunners. He added 12 points and three assists in the 71-48 triumph against Pacific Lutheran University (Wash.).
A three-time league player of the week, Dine averaged 19.0 points in four contests the last two weeks. Dine drained a school and conference record 11 3-pointers against Knox College (Ill.) on December 29. The 11 3-pointers made is also tied for the fourth most by a women in an NCAA Division III game.
Both basketball teams will be in Waverly Wednesday night to take on Wartburg College in a doubleheader starting with the women’s game at 6 p.m. The men will follow at around 8 p.m.
