Shirley Jordan, 77, of rural Oskaloosa, died Sunday, July 14, 2013, at her home west of Oskaloosa.
Shirley was born November 4, 1935, at Oskaloosa, the third oldest daughter of seven children born to James and Thelma Gorman Rodgers. She graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1953. Early on she worked at Dean’s Cigar Store in Oskaloosa. On December 6, 1954, she was united in marriage to Herbert Jordan in Missouri. Following their marriage, Shirley worked at the old Continental Overall Factory. Following her time at the overall factory, she stayed home to care for her children and home. After her children were older she went back to work, this time as a nurse’s aide working in area nursing homes.
Shirley enjoyed reading, watching old movies and canning. She also enjoyed cooking. However, her delight came in watching her family enjoy her finished dishes, especially her homemade stew, noodles and fried chicken. Her life revolved around her family. She treasured the time spent with them, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Early on she enjoyed volunteering with the Girl Scouts and Brownies. She also enjoyed helping out at the food pantry and Head Start. She enjoyed spending the last thirty years with her husband Herb on their farm.
Her family includes her husband of over 58 years Herbert Jordan of rural Oskaloosa; their four daughters, Carrie (& Leland) Sams of Oskaloosa, Janice Jordan of Oskaloosa, Carol (& James) Champlin of Oskaloosa, and Gale (& David) Mitchell of Jackson, Tennessee; eleven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; a sister, Marilyn Cook in New Jersey; and three brothers, Larry (& Jane) Rodgers of Ankeny, Gary (& Mary) Rodgers of Oskaloosa and David (& Connie) Rodgers of University Park.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and two sisters, Beverly Fortney and Donna Miller.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend David Childers officiating.
Burial will be in the Highland Cemetery at Eddyville. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Tuesday after 12 noon in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 6-8 Tuesday evening to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to the family or the Oskaloosa Christian Grade School Tuition Assistance Program.
