Saints Sweep Statesmen in Rescheduled DH
Clinton–Finally playing a non-conference twinbill that had been postponed numerous times, the William Penn softball team came up short twice against Ashford Monday.
The Statesmen (9-14) fell by scores of 4-0 and 6-3.
Ashford (18-16) provided all the offense in the opener, putting one on the board in the fourth inning and adding three more in the sixth. The navy and gold, who were outhit 5-3 in the pitchers’ duel, were led by Tabitha Scott (Fr., Placentia, Calif., Psychology) with a double.
Chyanne Koko (So., Waianae, Hawaii, Business Management) struck out two without a walk in the loss. The sophomore is now 2-5 this spring.
The visitors fell behind again in the second outing as the Saints produced twice in the fourth. WPU finally snapped its scoreless drought with a run in the fifth as Scott came around to touch home plate.
AU answered with a run of its own, but the Statesmen kept pushing and managed a game-tying two runs in the sixth as Taylor Vernon (So., Tracy, Calif., Ripon HS) brought in both runs on a pinch-hit single. Unfortunately, Ashford, which owned a 9-6 edge in hits, had the last laugh with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to complete the sweep.
Scott tallied a pair of base knocks and also went the distance in the pitcher’s circle. The freshman (1-1) had one strikeout against two walks.
