Question of the Week: How did Oskaloosa Public Works respond to last week’s Blizzard?

Last week, we asked you if you believed Christmas has become too commercialized. 177 residents responded with 148 residents (84%) voting yes, 16 residents (9%) voting I don’t care, and 13 residents (7%) voting no. The question of the week poll is unscientific and does not reflect the views of Osky News.

This week’s question of the week deals with the city’s response to the recent blizzard. Last week, Oskaloosa was the recipient of a blizzard. The first major snow of the season came with a fury, bringing Oskaloosa around 4 inches of snow as well as 50 mph winds. Beginning at about 7 pm last Saturday, snow began to fall and the winds began to pick up. Roads quickly became snow and ice covered as conditions deteriorated over the evening. By Sunday morning, the storm had mostly passed.

During the day Sunday, it was evident that the city was working to clean streets based on the snow piles in the downtown area. Snow plows were also seen going through residential areas as well. Some say that what the city did was not enough. These same people say that the residential streets were not adequately cleared and as a result became snow and ice covered throughout the week causing travel to be dangerous. However, some have said that what the city did was fine. They bring up the point that the city does have a budget to follow and needs to spend more time on the more traveled roads than the lesser traveled ones.

Now its your turn to decide. Vote in our online poll. The poll will be open until 9 PM next Sunday when we will close the poll and release the final voting numbers. As a reminder, our Christmas Light Contest poll has been extended until 11:59 pm on December 29th. You may vote for your favorite Christmas light display by clicking on the tab on the menu or by clicking HERE. If you have any questions, please contact us at info@oskynews.org.
