Oskaloosa City Council meets in regular session

Oskaloosa, Iowa- The Oskaloosa City Council met in regular session Monday evening with Mayor David Krutzfeldt presiding. The first item on the agenda was that of public comment. Jane Kauzlarich, an Oskaloosa Resident, spoke to the council regarding the possibility of privatizing the Edmundson Golf Course.

After public comments,came requests from the general public. The first request came from Mainstreet Oskaloosa. Mainstreet was requesting the closure of South First Street between High Ave East and 1st Ave East from Friday September 9th, 2011 to Sunday September 11th, 2011 at midnight for a 9/11 memorial. The plans also call for a short program to honor the 9/11 victims. The request was approved 6-0.

The next item came from the Oskaloosa High School Student Council. The Student Council was requesting approval of the annual homecoming parade. The request was approved 6-0.

Next, Beth Danowsky of MUSCO was present to give presentation to the City Council regarding the new Community Stadium.

After the Presentation, Mayor Krutzfeldt announced that there were several vacancies on various different boards and commissions. Council Member Tom Walling inquired as to whether or not anyone had applied for the vacancies. Krutzfeldt reported that currently two people had submitted applications for the Water Board.

The Council next approved two requests from Mid American Energy. Both requests were for Mid American to furnish and sell Natural Gas and Electric Energy to residents and to have the City of Oskaloosa collect franchise fees for a period of 25 years. Both requests were approved on 6-0 votes.

The final two items dealt with voter wards. The Iowa Secretary of State’s office is encouraging the City of Oskaloosa to allow residents of University Park to vote in a certain city ward. The proposal before the council was to have the residents of University Park vote in the Oskaloosa 3rd ward. This plan would only affect General and Primary elections. University Park residents would still vote in University Park for City and School elections. A memorandum of agreement between the City of Oskaloosa, City of University Park, and Mahaska County was approved 6-0 for the purposes of combining these voting precincts.

The final item was similar to the previous item. The Secretary of State’s office is encouraging the City of Oskaloosa to allow some residents of the Spring Creek Township to vote in a certain city ward. The second proposal to the council was for residents in a portion of the Spring Creek township to vote in the Oskaloosa 4th Ward. A memorandum of agreement between the City of Oskaloosa and Mahaksa County was approved 6-0 for the purposes of combing these voting precincts.

The next meeting of the Oskaloosa City Council will be on September 5th at 6:30 PM in the City Council Chambers.
