NM Wrestlers Go 2-1 in Quad

Ryan Groom at 132, Hunter Wernli at 144, Gage Reis at 157 and Angello Wittenburg at 165 all went undefeated. Gage Ries, who battled a bloody nose throughout his matches, pinned all three of his opponents. Wittenburg had the fastest pin of the night taking just 17 seconds to win over BGM’s Shawn Keller.
North Mahaska remains open at 106, 113 and 120 and give up points at those weights, but strong mid-weight efforts help the Warhawks to continue to score and win duals.
Against BGM, Joel DeJong put NM on the board a forfeit at 126. North Mahaska was trailing 29-0 until DeJong’s victory. Groom followed up with a 6-2 decision of Briar Kriegel.
Cole Wernli pinned Ethan Bridgewater at 138 in 1 minute 14 seconds and Hunter Wernli earned a 46 second pin of Graydon Arens. Dawson DeBoef received a forfeit at 150, Reis pinned Ashten Kalinay in 1:29 followed by Wittenburg’s pin.
In the match with Baxter, senior Will Goemaat picked up his first win when he received a forfeit at 215. NM trailed 15-6 going into Groom’s match with Kolten Hurd. In the second period, Groom was leading 4-0 before pinning Hurd in 3:32.
Cole Wernli pinned Maddox Peters in 3:25 and Hinter Wernli received a forfeit putting NM up 24-15. Ries pinned Ruger Kincaid in 2:13 and Wittenburg took a forfeit. Chance Angle received a forfeit at 190 to round out the scoring.
Knoxville, a Class 3A school with a long tradition of quality wrestling, provided a big challenge for the Warhawks.
The match started at 285 and it was not until DeJong pinned Joe Finnegan in 1:51 to cut into the Panthers’ 24-0 lead. Groom cut the lead in half with a pin of Chase Rider in 2:42. Knoxville led 30-12 when Hunter Wernli pinned Koltan Hornaday in 1:23. Ries pinned Hayden Norris in 1:50 and Wittenburg took down Kale Kincaid in 3:00, but the Warhawks could not overcome the Panthers.
In the girls’ matches, Macie Little scored two pins over Baxter’s Zoey Gliem. She pinned her in the first match in 1:01 and 1:06 in the second at 130 pounds. Kaylia Shipman faced Johnelle Gliem pinning her in 3:57 in the first match while Gliem took the second match with a pin in 47 seconds.
