NAIA Second Team for Lewis, HM for Whitehead
Oskaloosa–Right fielder Khyia Lewis (Sr., Ottumwa, Ottumwa HS) and southpaw pitcher Jennifer Whitehead (So., Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa HS) were honored with some of the best accolades available as the 2012 NAIA Softball All-American teams were announced.
Lewis was a second-team nod, while Whitehead received an honorable mention. The national awards are the first for both players and are the 18th and 19th All-American awards for the softball program.
Lewis concluded her collegiate career by leading the navy and gold in most offensive categories, including three of the big four: batting average (.364, 68-of-187), home runs (17), and RBIs (61). The Midwest Collegiate Conference Player of the Year also scored 57 runs with 143 total bases, a .765 slugging percentage, a .459 on-base clip, and a school-record 32 walks.
MCC’s Pitcher of the Year, Whitehead was 24-12 with a 1.44 Earned Run Average. In 228 2/3 innings, she struck out 193 batters against 65 walks, while opponents hit just .210 versus the sophomore. Her 38 appearances (35 starts) netted 32 complete games and 12 shutouts.
Grand View catcher Emily Gilbert also represented the MCC as a second-teamer.
