Mike breathed his first breath of eternal life Monday morning with his wife by his side at the Mahaska Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa at the age of 64 years, 8 months and 26 days.

He was born on February 24, 1946 in Oskaloosa the son of Nathaniel Armstrong Ver Steeg Jr. and Swannee Charlene Dillon. He graduated from the Twin Cedars High School with the class of 1964. On November 18, 1978 he was united in marriage to Katherine Elaine Hamilton at Tracy United Methodist Church. Michael and Katherine made their home in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Michael went to work at Clow Valve Company in Oskaloosa. He worked as a lift truck operator for 28 years. He retired in 2007 because of his health. Fishing, hunting, boating, four wheeling, motorcycle riding beside his wife, and camping or working on his son’s race car were his great passions. He was a loving dedicated and devoted father. The closeness the two shared as father and son will be sorely missed. He was a member of the Eagles and VFW. He served in the military in December 28, 1965 as an artillery surveyor. As an artillery surveyor his job was to precede the firing units, map the area and gather information necessary to bring fire on a target. He completed his service to his county on December of 1967 as a SP/4. Michael enjoyed watching NASCAR races. He enjoyed spending many hours on the Des Moines River boating, fishing, and camping with family and friends. The story telling of adventures on the river have given family and friends many fond memories to cherish.

His family includes his wife Katherine of 32 years; a son Dustin Ver Steeg of Oskaloosa; a daughter Lisa Collins of Delta; his mother Pat Ver Steeg of Tracy; two sisters: Diana Roebuck of Oskaloosa and Chris Williams of Tracy. He had several nieces and nephews and extended family. Crystal, Sabrina, and Trevor he had nicknames and special memories of each of you. He truly missed and loved each of you. “Bud, his German Shorthair, he most certainly loved just as another kid in our family. Even though he is our dog he had a very special place in his master’s life. Whether he was walking or lying beside by Michael he was truly his companion and a best friend forever. Michael will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father Nathaniel Armstrong with whom he will now rejoin.

The family of Michael VerSteeg would like to express their sincere appreciation to the dedicated staff at Mahaska Health Partnership, especially the infusion center nurses. Sally, Jessie, Sandy, and Mona each of you are truly our amazing angels in healthcare; you made our journey so much easier. The care, compassion and dignity of the MHP Hospice staff will always be greatly remembered and holds a special place in our heart always. The excellent care and compassion given to our family by Kim, Vicky and Jackie made our journey in hospice care wonderful and at times a rock to our family in our journey.
