Leona Malin, 94, of Oskaloosa, died Saturday evening, October 10, 2015, at the Mahaska Health Partnership Hospice Services Serenity House. Leona Marie Malin, daughter of John and Lydia Grace (Winegardner) Chilcote, was born May 18, 1921, at the rural home of her parents in Jefferson Township, Mahaska County, Iowa.
Leona attended the Riverside country school through the 8th grade and then remained home to care for her ailing mother.
After her mother passed away in 1937, she took a job at Kresge, and later Woolworth and the Continental Overall Factory. On May 4, 1946, Leona married Delmar “Bill” William Malin. Leona worked until the birth of her daughter, Donna, after which she stayed home to care for her. In 1950, she and Bill also bought their farm, southwest of Oskaloosa in Scott Township. They remained on the farm until 1985, when Bill’s health began to decline.
Leona enjoyed being a farmer’s wife. She raised a large garden and was an excellent cook. She also enjoyed neighborhood friends, who she shared coffee time and many evenings of card games. She was a member of the Riverside O.D.O. Club for over 50 years.
Leona is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Donna & Don Arendt, of Oskaloosa; grandchildren: Todd (& Kris) Arnedt of Altoona and Angie (& Peter) McGaugh of Montreal, Canada; great-grandchildren: Bailey (& Mike) Larsen of Mesa, AZ, Zachary Arendt and Hanna Arendt of Altoona; and great-great-grandson, Jackson Larsen.
In addition to her parents, Leona was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, May 24, 1988.
Funeral services for Leona will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, October 14, at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel. Reverend Angie Arnedt will officiate.
Burial will be in Forest Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 11 a.m., Tuesday at the funeral chapel; the family will be present from 5-7 p.m. to greet visitors.
