Lady Statesmen Lose 1-0 to Northwestern in Opener

William Penn Women's Athletics

Orange City–Offensive struggles doomed the William Penn women’s soccer team in its 2011 opener as the squad fell 1-0 to Northwestern in non-conference action.

The Lady Statesmen (0-1), who were outshot 16-7, allowed the contest’s lone goal at the 16:37 mark. A closer second half ensued with the Red Raiders holding a slim 7-5 edge in shots.

Mandy Martell (So., Culpeper, Va., Culpeper County HS) paced the visitors with three shots, while Melisa Wink (Sr., Brookfield, Ill., Lyons Township HS) also had multiple shots with two.

Laura Gentry (So., Fruitland, Idaho, Fruitland HS) made eight saves between the pipes, but it was not enough in the setback.

Next: William Penn remains on the road this weekend, traveling to Whiting, Ind. for the Calumet-St. Joseph Tournament. The Lady Statesmen face Marygrove (Mich.) Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and then play again Sunday in either the championship or consolation game.
