Lady Statesmen Earn Draw Against Host Calumet

Whiting, Ind.–An improved offensive attack allowed the William Penn women’s soccer team to claim a 2-2 tie against host Calumet-St. Joseph in Sunday’s consolation game of the Crimson Wave Tournament.

William Penn (0-2-1) posted 20 shots to 17 for the Crimson Wave, but needed a very late goal to salvage the draw.

Calumet scored in the 18th and 20th minutes and was in control early, but Mandy Martell (So., Culpeper, Va., Culpeper County HS) took some of the momentum back just before halftime with a goal at the 43:36 juncture. Marci Smith (Fr., Runnells, Southeast Polk HS) assisted on the tally.

Martell was busy on the offensive end, accounting for nine of her team’s shots, including putting five on goal.

The deficit remained one until the final seconds of regulation when Lauren Terrell (Sr., Chandler, Ariz., Chandler HS) scored unassisted to force overtime. The goal was Terrell’s second of the weekend.

Both squads recorded three shots each in the extra periods, but neither could claim the golden goal victory.

Laura Gentry (So., Fruitland, Idaho, Fruitland HS) made a save on seven shots serving as the last line of defense.

For her efforts, Rocio Bonilla (So., Sun City, Calif., Paloma Valley HS) was named to the all-tournament team.

Next: William Penn remains on the road, traveling to Sioux City Tuesday to face Briar Cliff in non-conference play at 4 p.m.
