Kreuser Posts Double-Double in Road Loss
Clinton–Turnovers doomed the Statesmen women’s basketball team in a 73-57 non-conference loss to Ashford Wednesday.
William Penn (10-16) led 37-34 at halftime, but was limited to 20 points on 25.8% shooting (37.5% overall) after the break. A total of 20 turnovers were the real culprit, however, as those mistakes were converted into 26 points for the host Saints (19-6). WPU was unable to avenge its 61-46 loss back on December 18.
The visitors last led at 45-44, but eight consecutive AU points put the Saints up for good. The Statesmen narrowed the deficit to four with 6:19 remaining and then five with 4:51 on the clock. Unfortunately, Ashford’s 8-0 run put the game out of reach.
The Saints, who shot 40.3%, also outrebounded WPU 43-40, but the navy and gold stayed in the ball game with a 14-5 edge in second-chance points. A 10-4 free throw advantage was secured by Ashford as well.
WPU’s four seniors did most of the work Wednesday, accounting for all but 11 points. Janay Pritchett (Sr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Biology) led the way with 19 points, including three three-pointers.
Jessie Kreuser (Sr., Mendota Heights, Minn., Physical Education) had an all-around solid outing with 16 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks, and three steals. It was her seventh double-double of the season.
Katie Golomski (Milwaukee, Wis., Psychology & Sociology) added seven points, while Vanessa Kieres (Sr., Chicago, Ill., Exercise Science) assisted on four baskets.
Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa Saturday to host St. Ambrose in MCC action at 1 p.m. The game will also serve as Senior Day.
