Served With Honor ~ United States Military Veteran

Howard Augustine, 87, of rural Rose Hill, died Friday, August 26, 2022, at the Pella Regional Health Center in Pella, Iowa. He was born April 26, 1935, in Mahaska County, the son of (Albert) Rommel and Mildred Lucille Brown Augustine.

Howard graduated from Lacey High School with the class of 1953.

Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army. He served in Korea with the 11th Engineers and was honorably discharged on December 3, 1955. He was proud of his military service and enjoyed his Honor Flight trip to Washington D.C.

After his service, Howard returned to Mahaska County and joined his dad and brother farming the family farm.

On December 20, 1955, Howard was united in marriage to Wanda Lockard at the Indianapolis Christian Church.

Howard worked hard on the generational farm, learning from his father and teaching the next generations. He believed in hard work and doing things the right way (his way) and teaching future generations to always do all they could to succeed. His commitment to agriculture was recognized by several honors throughout his career including Master Pork Producer and Outstanding Farm Family by the North Mahaska FFA to name a few. It was a great honor to him for the farm to be recognized as a “Heritage Farm” for being owned by the same family for 150 years. He enjoyed being in 4H as a young man and continued to support the 4H program as an adult.

Howard always found time to support his community. He was an active member of the Indianapolis Christian Church until it’s closure at which time they joined the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa where he served as a board member and volunteered for various programs. He also served on the Indianapolis Cemetery Board, and coached little league for many years in Barnes City. His commitment to the Lord, Family, and Farming will be upheld through the future generations of the Augustine family.

His family includes his three children and their spouses: Mike (& Leesa) Augustine of Rose Hill, Julie Augustine (& Gary Bufalo) of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Dan (& Teresa) Augustine of Rose Hill; seven grandchildren: Adam (& Jen) Coster, Seth (& Sampada) Coster, Emily (& Graham) Anderson, Sam Coster (& Diana Zeng), Ryan (& Caryn) Augustine, Caitlin (& Chris) Rhea, and Hannah Augustine; four great grandchildren: Grant Augustine, Matthew Augustine, Henry Augustine, and Flynn Anderson; a sister in law, Esther Augustine of Rose Hill; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Wanda on June 21, 2012; and his brother, Keith Augustine.
