Hot! Hot! Hot! Southern Iowa Fair Ends For 2017

Oskaloosa, Iowa – There were many different events to keep attendees of the 2017 Southern Iowa Fair entertained during the week long event. The difficult part was keeping attendance up because of the extreme heat that plagued the region.

When it came to the heat, it certainly impacted the attendance as highlighted by comments made to the Oskaloosa News Facebook page.

Debbie Guild said, “Our family would normally go down for dinner one evening and check out the animals and the 4-H projects. The heat this year kept us away.”

Scarlett Kint agreed, “Too hot. I could[n’t] take the kids out in the extreme heat. Nothing you can do about that.”

The extreme heat also meant that the animals were released early for the safety of everyone.

A few events highlighted the week for many of those attending the fair. KIIC’s Wing Ding Fling Thing, the demolition derby, and the Redneck Rally Race were those most mentioned as standouts.

The carnival wasn’t what some expected, but competing for a carnival company to attend your fair is something the fair board has bumped up against for the past few years.

Kelly Saville said, “The Midway was pretty scarce!!”

“I personally liked the carnival better this year. I have younger kids and I felt like the rides were better for younger kids . The general atmosphere at the midway seemed better for younger kids and families. And the workers were great with my 4 year old!”, add Holly Ridenour.

The fair ended on Saturday night with a demolition derby and concert. The winners of the weeks various events are listed below.

*Bag O’Clay

Bag O’ Clay is an opportunity for youth to gain skills in working with clay and learning new techniques. They are each provided with two pounds of urban-wear clay and given a month to complete an exhibit which could be a plaque/tile, pottery, or a functional piece. The participants attended a workshop with Orla Stodghill, who is an Oskaloosa Elementary Art teacher. She provided the participants with tips and techniques for working with clay. This is a partnership with Oskaloosa Elementary School, as the clay pieces were fired in the Elementary Art room. The exhibitors then met with Briana Bartlett, who is also an art teacher at the Oskaloosa Elementary School and a member of FACE. She evaluated the exhibits in a conference judging setting where the exhibitors were evaluated on what they learned, technique, and overall appearance of their Bag O’ Clay exhibit.
