Helen L. Pfoutz, 96, of Oskaloosa, died Friday, August 7, 2015, at Sigourney Health Care in Sigourney. She was born October 11, 1918, in Poweshiek County, the daughter of Glenn and Myrtle Cochran Babb.
Early on Helen did housekeeping and house cleaning around Oskaloosa. On September 30, 1950, she was united in marriage to George Pfoutz in Oskaloosa. George died May 26, 1965. For many years Helen worked as a tour guide at Nelson Pioneer Farm north of Oskaloosa.
Helen was a member of the Free Methodist Church in Oskaloosa.
Helen enjoyed many kinds of hand work and being creative. She embroidered two quilts of the state birds and flowers. She spent many early morning hours tending to a large garden and loved to get her hands dirty planting and weeding her flowerbeds. It brought her great joy to make birthday cakes to celebrate birthdays with the children and grandchildren.
Her family includes her two children: Stephen Pfoutz of Oskaloosa, and Mary (& Brian) Lester of Oskaloosa; two grandchildren: Sarah (& Brent) Norman, and Laci (& Alex) Wickenkamp; five great grandchildren: Hunter, Tate and Callie Norman, and Zane and Quinn Wickenkamp.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Paul Pfoutz; and a sister, Esther Woodward.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, August 9, 2015, at 6 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Zachary Payne officiating.
Burial will be on Monday in the Union Mills Cemetery. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Sunday after 12 noon in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 4 p.m. until service time at 6 on Sunday evening.
