Harold “Hal” Silk Sr., 77, of New Sharon passed away Sunday evening, September 6, 2015 at the Grinnell Health Care Center in Grinnell. Harold James Silk Sr., the son of Joseph Howard and Angeline Poor Dog Silk, was born on December 30, 1937 on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation in Ft. Yates, North Dakota.

Hal attended school at an Indian Catholic Boarding School in South Dakota and completed two years at Simpson College.

In 1968, Hal moved to Des Moines where he held several odd end jobs before opening a carpet cleaning business, Mr. Carpet Kleen. He was also a bus driver for the First Assembly of God Church in Des Moines. In 1991, Hal moved to New Sharon to be closer to his Son, Harold Jr. While living in New Sharon, he drove school bus for North Mahaska and Oskaloosa schools.

Hal was an avid golfer. He enjoyed playing and watching tennis, watching Football, the North Mahaska Warhawks. Above all he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and attending all their school activities.

Hal was a member of the Prairie Knolls Country Club, a Grandview Golf Men’s Club and the First Assembly of God Church in Des Moines.

He is survived by his sons: Harold (& Judy) Silk Jr. of New Sharon, and Fred Rivas Jr. of Des Moines; two grandchildren: Jacob Silk of New Sharon, and Alexis Silk of Pella; and a sister, Linda Moericke of Bismark, North Dakota.

Hal was preceded in death by his parents; and four siblings: Rita Noani, Lenhart Silk, Beulah Childs, and Emory Silk.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 am Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at the Friends Cemetery in New Sharon.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in the family’s name to help pay for final expenses.
