(Harley) James Hartman, Sr., 53, of Barnes City died Saturday, February 25, 2012, at his home in Barnes City. He was born Thursday, December 4, 1958, the son of Walter “Red” and Rose Bloomquist Hartman in Burlington, Iowa. On February 12, 1982 he was united in marriage to Mary Reeder in Burlington. He had several hobbies including collecting things and playing games on the computer. He had a special knack for finding treasures in things that others were throwing away. His granddaughters Jae and Chi and his puppy Casey were his world.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years: Mary Hartman of Barnes City; a daughter: Kay (Eric Sellers) Hartman of Montezuma; two sons: Harley James (Nicole) Hartman, Jr. of Montezuma and Daniel Hartman of Barnes City; 5 grandchildren: Chiane and Jaemi Hartman of Montezuma, Trevor Grimm of Kansas City, Missouri, and Royce and Lance Griffith of Mesa, Arizona; his mother: Rose Crone of Burlington; two sisters: Marshele (Kerry) Robison of Powderly, Kentucky and Shannon Hartman of Burlington; 5 brothers: Bruce (Gayle) Hartman, Wayne Hartman, Rick Hartman, Ed (Bonnie) Hartman and Alfred (Tonya) Hartman all of Burlington; a niece: Jes Robison of Powderly, Kentucky and his puppy: Casey.

He was preceded in death by his father: Walter “Red” Hartman; a step father: Al Crone; and a sister: Debbie Hartman.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 28, 2012, at 1:30 pm in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating. As was his wish his body will be cremated following the service and no burial is planned at this time. Visitation will begin after 11:00 am on Tuesday in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral home from 11 – 1:30 pm Tuesday to greet friends and relatives. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the James Hartman Memorial Fund or that a stepping stone be sent.
