Guthridge Breaks High Jump Record at Final Conference Warm-Up

Lamoni–Kyleigh Guthridge (So., Bondurant, Iowa, General Accounting) was not only the best high jumper in the field Friday, but also put her name atop the record books as the William Penn women’s track and field team competed at the Graceland Winter Series #4 Friday.

Guthridge won the high jump with a new school record of 5-3.25, breaking the previous mark of 5-3 set by Caitlin Morton in 2018.

She was one of two event champions for the navy and gold as Shaniah Newby (So., Twentynine Palms, Calif., Nursing) also took the 200-meter dash crown in a time of 26.29 seconds. The sophomore nearly claimed a pair of titles, finishing third in the 55-meter dash at 7.45.

Katherine Hunter (Jr., Bloomfield, Iowa, Exercise Science), Abigaille Batu-Tiako (So., Plattsburgh, N.Y.), and Jordyn Gilpin (So., Missouri Valley, Iowa, Software Engineering) also came up just short as the trio all earned runner-up status. Hunter was second in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.92 seconds, Batu-Tiako took home silver in the triple jump at 33-6, and Gilpin claimed second place in the 400-meter dash in 1:04.57.

Zena Cohuo (Jr., Carrollton, Texas, Exercise Science) guided the Statesmen distance runners by finishing third in the 1,000-meter run at 3:23.80.

Newby was not alone at the top of the 55-meter dash standings as Alexandra Rose (Fr., Quincy, Ill., Exercise Science) took sixth (7.57) and Danisha Washington (Jr., Peoria, Ill.) was seventh (7.61).

Ashley Omoregie (Jr., Old Bridge, N.J., Biology) made it two WPU 200-meter dash runners in the top 10, placing 10th in 28.29 seconds.

On the throws side, Deriana Bryant (So., Woodlynne, N.J.) again took the lead, finishing fifth in the weight throw (41-8.5) and sixth in the shot put (34-9.75).

“Our goal today was to move up in both the conference as well as the nation and we did that today,” Head Coach Allen Friesen said. “Coach (Danielle) Kurywchak’s crew killed it in the hurdles and jumps today with several personal bests and season bests.”

Next Up: William Penn is off until February 19-20 when it travels to Maryville, Mo. to compete at the Heart Indoor Championships.
